Mike Mahon
Mike Mahon’s style is impressionistic realism. His portraits and Southwestern landscape paintings seem to intensify and exaggerate the story he wants to tell in them. Ordinary people and places are suddenly transformed when Mike focuses on the heart and soul of his subjects. As Hunter Ingalls, art educator and art critic, stated in a newspaper show critique, “Mike Mahon (pronounced May'-hon) is an artist with a clear command of both the oil and pastel media... (his) works reveal an ability to single out simple, unassuming details for special emphasis, elevating the imagery into radiant, dream-like originality.”

Mike doesn't approach his work in a formulaic way, limiting himself to only one kind image or technique. He paints what he loves, not what he thinks will sell. That keeps his work fresh and spontanieous.

My grandfather moved his family from Fort Worth, Texas, to Taos, New Mexico, in 1913, to be the town‘s only pharmacist, living next to Kit Carson’s residence and the one-time Stables Gallery. He sometimes bartered his prescriptions for the paintings of struggling artists, who were part of the original Taos art colony. The turn of the century artists explorers who discovered Taos and northern New Mexico's extraordinary landscape and light came by wagon as my grandfather did. The least I could do is use my "Explorer" to capture this enchanted land.
A few years after my grandfather moved to Taos a nephew of my grandfather was disowned by his father because he wanted to be an actor and artist which were considered dishonorable professions in deep East Texas in the 20's. He moved to Taos and became a successful artist, musician, and art gallery owner. My ties to Northern New Mexico and it's artistic past run deep and personal in me.
Many of my oil and pastel landscape paintings are on location painting en plein air. Nothing compares to the adrenaline rush of painting in nature battling time, weather, insects, dogs, and pesky tourists. Northern New Mexico is my passion!
